DeFerran delighted with Firehawks in Gateway 250.
Marlboro Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran, who led 81 of 200 laps in today's Indy Racing League event at Gateway International Raceway, had nothing but good words for his Firestone Firehawks. After climbing from his Firehawk-equipped Dallara/Chevrolet, de Ferran said today's race was one of the toughest he's ever run, but that his Firestone tires were "really, really good the whole race."
"They were so consistent," de Ferran said. "My car just seemed to get better toward the end of the race. It was a very hard race and the pace was just unbelievable. On the last stint, it just seemed that the car kept improving as the stint went on. This is a handling track, and our car handled very well."
Joe Barbieri, Firestone Racing Project Supervisor: "The unusual corners, high track temperatures and fast speeds we encountered today combined to present a tough challenge for the Firestone Racing program --but the Firehawk racing radials came through with flying colors, turning in a flawless performance. Lap after lap, we saw lots of great passing as drivers weaved their way through traffic and drove just about any kind of line they wanted. High, medium or low on the track, they had the grip they needed. Gil (de Ferran) and the whole Marlboro Team Penske squad did a tremendous job today. We are certainly pleased to be a part of that effort, and congratulate Gil on his win and for moving to the lead in the season championship race."
Firestone Performance Award: Marlboro Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran earned the Firestone Performance Award of $10,000 for leading at lap 69 today. The award celebrates Firestone tires being in all 69 IRL events conducted thus far - the only tire company to claim that honor.
