Firehawks Supplied: The Firestone Racing program brought 1,292 Firehawk racing tires to Gateway International Raceway for this weekend's Indy Racing League competition, enough to provide eight sets per car as set by IRL officials.
The Firehawks were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio, and feature the same compound/construction combination used at the earlier Pikes Peak and Nashville IRL events.
This Weekend's Event is the 69th race for the IRL since the series began competition in 1996, and the second IRL race at GIR. The driver leading at lap 69 in Sunday's race will receive a $10,000 Firestone Performance Award bonus, celebrating Firestone being the only tire brand to appear in every IRL race.
Firestone Motorsports Executive Director Al Speyer: "It's not often we can bring the exact same construction/compound Firehawk to an IRL event, but the similarities between this track and a couple of others allow us to do that. Being familiar with how a tire performs allows teams to set up their cars more quickly and to focus on other factors involved with winning a race. Gateway is a great place for fans and drivers. With its long straights and high-banked curves, we'll see impressive speeds and plenty of drafting and passing. We're pleased to contribute to such impressive racing, and are looking forward to another great event this weekend. We're also pleased the Nashville-based Firestone Racing program isn't the only performer coming from Tennessee. Hearing Martina McBride bring a bit of Music City to St. Louis in her concert appearance will make us feel right at home."
