A gearbox problem early in the race ended the CURB Records team's day at the Gateway International Raceway.
In Lap 50, Billy Boat radioed into his pit crew "Something happened to the box." A lap later, the #98 rolled into pit row. The crew valiantly pushed the car to a safe spot and repaired what they could, but Boat was sent back onto the track with only 6th gear in tact and 15 laps down.
He faced a tough dilemma -- stay on the track and try to finish the race with limited handling options or be cautious and park the car, ending the race early for the team. With two races still left in the season, and a race car that was loose exiting the dangerous Turn 4, Boat took the reasonable option and in Lap 92 brought the #98 into the pit box.
"This is definitely not the kind of day we were looking for," said Boat. "The CURB Records car had a bit of a handling problem at the beginning and then we ended up having a gear box problem about 60 laps in which cost us about 15 laps. We went back out but still didn't really have the balance that I was looking for in the car, so rather than take a chance on having something happen, we decided to save the car and go on to Chicago and Texas."
The CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing team finished the race in 23rd position. Pole sitter Gil de Ferran edged out teammate Helio Castroneves for the victory, followed by Alex Barron and rookie Buddy Rice.
Boat realistically summed up the weekend, "You know, this kind of a racetrack, not having the opportunity to get some laps in, it's a tough place to get a handle on. We just got behind and never caught up."
The CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing team next heads to Joliet, IL for the Delphi Indy 300, September 8th at Chicagoland Speedway.
