Franchitti Earns Sixth-Place Finish at California Speedway
FONTANA, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2004) - ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti recorded a sixth-place finish Sunday afternoon at the Indy Racing League IndyCar® Series California Indy 400 at California Speedway.
Franchitti started the event from ninth place, and kept the #27 ArcaEx Honda-powered Dallara among the top 10 throughout the day. Despite not having the outright speed to race with the front- runners, Franchitti was able to utilize the draft to gain a solid finishing position.
Honda-powered Adrian Fernandez earned the victory, while Team 7-Eleven teammate Tony Kanaan clinched the IndyCar Series championship with a second-place finish. Klein Tools/Jim Beam driver Dan Wheldon placed third, followed by Sam Hornish Jr., and Buddy Rice.
Franchitti currently stands sixth in the point standings, 14 behind fifth-place Helio Castroneves and 21 shy of fourth place Fernandez. The final event of the 2004 season takes place on Oct. 17 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We set the ArcaEx car up to race in packs, but unfortunately, that wasn't the way the race played out. We were just a bit too slow on our own and were kind of a sitting duck unless we could stay with the guys in front. Sixth at the finish was good for the ArcaEx team and it was very emotional joining my teammates for doughnuts on the backstretch in remembrance of Greg (Moore)."
Kyle Moyer, General Manager, Andretti Green Racing:
"For Dario to finish at Fontana is good because he hasn't had the best of luck here. I thought the ArcaEx car was good all day, just a little slower than what we would have liked. Now that Andretti Green Racing has won the IndyCar Series championship with Tony, we can concentrate on getting second place for Dan and it would be nice to get Dario up into fourth place."
