Ganassi, Kelley, Nunn, Foyt, Dreyer & Reinbold enter cars as deadline looms

INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - Five teams filed entries March 30 for the 88th Indianapolis 500, including defending Indy Racing League(R) IndyCar(R) Series champion Target Chip Ganassi Racing and multi-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt Enterprises.

The teams combined to enter a total of 16 cars, including backup cars, as Target Chip Ganassi Racing, A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Kelley Racing each entered four cars. Pioneer Mo Nunn Racing and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing each entered two cars.

The 88th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Entries must be postmarked by midnight Wednesday, March 31. Qualifications for the 33-car starting field begin on Pole Day, Saturday, May 15.

Defending IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon will drive the No. 1 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Panoz/Toyota Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. Ricky Davis is the chief mechanic.

Dixon will attempt to make his second career Indianapolis 500 start. He placed 17th as an Indy rookie last year after crashing with nine laps remaining.

Indy rookie Darren Manning will drive the No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Panoz/Toyota Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. Dave Higuera is the chief mechanic.

Scott Harner and Barry Wanser are the team managers of the Ganassi entries. Ganassi won the 2000 Indianapolis 500 with current Formula One star Juan Pablo Montoya driving.

A.J. Foyt Enterprises won at Indy in 1977 with owner A.J. Foyt driving and in 1999 with Kenny Brack behind the wheel. Foyt also drove to victory in 1961, 1964 and 1967 at Indianapolis.

A.J. Foyt IV, Foyt's grandson, will attempt to make his second Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 14 Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. Richie Simon is the chief mechanic.

Foyt IV finished 18th at Indianapolis as a rookie in 2003.

A.J. Foyt Enterprises also entered the No. 41 A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara/Toyota/Firestone and a backup for a driver to be named later.

Craig Baranouski is the team manager of the Foyt entries.

Kelley Racing filed entries for 2001 Indianapolis 500 MBNA Pole winner Scott Sharp and three-time Indy Racing League Most Popular Driver Sarah Fisher.

1996 Indy Racing League champion Sharp will drive the No. 8 Delphi Dallara/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. John Worth is the chief mechanic.

Sharp will attempt to make his 10th Indianapolis 500 start. His best finish is 10th in 1996 and 2000.

Fisher, one of only three women to race in the Indianapolis 500, will drive the No. 39 Dallara/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. Jim Reid is the chief mechanic.

Fisher will attempt to make her fifth Indianapolis 500 start. Her best finish is 24th in 2002.

Paul Harcus is the team manager of both Kelley Racing entries.

2003 Indianapolis 500 Bank One Rookie of the Year Tora Takagi will drive the No. 12 Pioneer Mo Nunn Racing Dallara/Toyota/Firestone, with a backup entered. Dan Lambert is the chief mechanic, with Peter Parrott the team manager.

Takagi placed fifth last year at Indianapolis, the top finish by a rookie.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing co-owner Robbie Buhl will attempt to make his ninth Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone, with a backup entered. Brian Franzosi is the chief mechanic, and John O'Gara is the team manager.

Buhl has recorded three top-10 finishes at Indianapolis, including a best of sixth in 1999.
