Team Menard driver Greg Ray described conditions during today's qualifying session for the Radisson 200 as "about as tough as it gets." The combination of strong gusts and track temperatures exceeding 140+ degrees made the afternoon very challenging. Ray mastered the elements and earned the pole with a speed of 176.585 mph. Second place on the grid went to Scott Sharp with a speed of 174.795 mph.
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Project Supervisor: "With an abbreviated two-day session here at Pikes Peak, the teams had the advantage of a known quality in their Firestone Firehawks. The tires we brought for this weekend's competition feature the same construction and compound as used here last year, so that was helpful in the shortened amount of time teams had to prepare their machines for the qualifying session. They knew what to expect from their tires, so they could focus on other variables in setting up their cars. Despite the high track temperatures today, the Firehawks were working and wearing very well. Tomorrow the ambient and track temperatures are expected to be even higher, so the tires are facing a major challenge on this tough oval as we face a two-hour race."
Quote from Team Menard Driver Greg Ray: "Tomorrow is going to be really tough as temperatures go even higher. In the first practice session we ran with a full tank of fuel, then we went back out with the same set of Firestones - they were wearing very well and we were just as quick at the end as we were at the beginning, so their consistency is really good. I really don't think tires are going to be an issue. The Firestones have been great. If track temperatures go up to 150 degrees tomorrow, it's a long race and it's going to be really tough for everybody."
