LANGHORNE, PA DECEMBER 9, 1999 . . . NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year Tony Stewart has been named to receive the prestigious Al Holbert Memorial/Eastern Motorsport Press Association Driver of the Year Award. And Kenny Tremont, winner of the Eckerd 300 for DIRT Modifieds at Syracuse, NY has won the EMPA Northeast Drive of the Year award. Both awards will be presented at the annual Eastern Motorsport Press Association convention at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Trevose, PA on January 8. The 250 member Eastern Motorsport Press Association will also be adding several well known names to their Hall of Fame. Four time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt tops the list of inductees. Joining Foyt will be one of midget racing's foremost motor and car builders, Ken Hickey. And from drag racing will come the late Dave Strickler, known as the best 4-speed Super Stock racer of his time. Four time American Racing Drivers Club champion Leigh Earnshaw will also enter the Hall of Fame as will one of NASCAR's most colorful personalities and outstanding competitor Junior Johnson. Will Cagle, one of the top modified racers for many years and a successful promoter of racing events, will be the last of the six EMPA Hall of Fame inductees. A number of other special awards will be presented at the Winston Hall of Fame Dinner which will include a MotorMax cocktail reception. It all happens on Saturday, January 8, 2000. During the weekend a number of press conferences, workshops, and seminars will be presented. Several very well known racers will be on hand to participate in the three days of activities. Pocono Raceway will be sponsoring the January 7 "Welcome Reception." Many local and regional champions will be on hand including Big Diamond champion Duane Howard, Grandview Speedway champion Terry Meitzler, ATQMRA champion Don Adams plus a number of others. The champions have been invited to participate in the special evening as guests of EMPA. Invitations have been sent to all local and regional champions. A number of NASCAR drivers are expected to be on hand during the weekend along with representatives from the Indy Racing League, CART, NHRA, IHRA, USNA, DIRT and other organizations. Grandview Speedway will be sponsoring a hospitality suite throughout the three days as they have for a number of years. In addition Tosco 76, STP, Performance Racing Industry, NHRA and others participate in the annual convention as sponsors. The convention is open to organizations, racers, speedways, and others who would like to benefit from building a rapport with the print, internet and broadcast media. More than 125 media that covers motorsports on a regular basis will be on hand for the convention.
