Colorado Springs, Colorado - Eddie Cheever drove his #51 The Children's Beverage Group/Team Cheever Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti to a 11th place finish at today's Colorado Indy 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway. As a tribute to Cheever's hard fought battle up the grid, and his move from 20th to 11th, Cheever takes home the MCI WorldCom Long Distance Award.
" It's been a rough one. I thought for sure we were good for a Top Five finish," said a despondent Cheever of the 200-mile/200-lap race. "We are on the losing side of an avid tire war right now."
"Goodyear brought a new compound with them and as a result, we've been chasing tires all weekend," continued Cheever. "We were up to 10th place (from his starting position of 20th) by the first stop and then, as high as 5th, after we finally got the right set of tires on our third stop. Unfortunately, with 20 laps to go, the engine, which had been incredibly strong all race, lost a cylinder. It's not been the best of weekends for Team Cheever."
With the finish, Cheever is now tied in seventh position with former teammate, Jeff Ward, and rookie Ronnie Johncox in the 1999 Drivers Points Standings.
"It looks like we are all fighting for second place at this point," spoke Cheever of the tight Championship battle." With two races left in the season, and still only 25 points out from second place, all this team will be focused on is winning races from here on out."
Round 9 of the 10-race Pep Boys Indy Racing League season, The Vegas.Com 500K at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will air live on ESPN on Sunday, September 26th.
