INDIANAPOLIS (May 7, 2002) - Heavy rains have moved through the Indianapolis area, exposing the track to the sun while safety crews work to dry the racing surface.

AT 10:54 local time teams began setting up the pits in preparation for day three of practice. Forecasts for the area indicate clear weather for the rest of the day.

Persistent rain on Monday left most teams under the impression the day would be a complete washout. Some teams failed to open their garage while others sent crew members home early in the day.

The track opened at 4:15 p.m. yesterday for practice with 28 cars running a total of 744 laps. Helio Castroneves, who was second fastest on opening day, set the fastest time on Monday, topping the speed charts at 226.716 mph.
