VISION RACING TO START SEVENTH AND TWELFTH AT CHICAGOLAND
JOLIET, Ill. -- Vision Racing driver, Tomas Scheckter, led the way for his team in qualifying taking the seventh spot for the start of tomorrow's Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 presented by Mr. Clean at Chicagoland Speedway. Scheckter's teammate, Ed Carpenter, qualified in the 12th spot. This marks Scheckter's eighth top-ten start of the 2006 IndyCar Series Season and the ninth time at least one Vision Racing entry has started in the top-ten this year.
Scheckter qualified the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone with an average speed of 213.024 mph and will start the race on the inside of row four. Currently, Scheckter sits in the ten spot for the driver championship points standings; just six points out of ninth which is currently held by Danica Patrick.
In three prior starts at Chicagoland Speedway, Scheckter has finished in the top-five twice and started in the top-three twice. In 2003 he had his best start at Chicagoland with a second place start and finished fifth. In 2005 he started 22nd, but finished 19th due to an accident. Last season he started from the third spot and drove to a fourth place finish.
Qualifying the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone in the 12th position, Carpenter will look to make his way through the field quickly at the start of tomorrow's race. He will take the green flag on the outside of row six. Prior to qualifying, Carpenter was the ninth fastest in combined practice results.
Carpenter has three attempts, including his IndyCar Series debut, at Chicagoland. His best start is 16th, occurring in 2003 and 2004 and his best finish came in 2004 when he finished just outside the top-ten in eleventh. Last season he started 19th and finished in the 17th position.
Both Carpenter and Scheckter will challenge for a pair of top-five finishes when the season finale 200-lap/300-mile event gets underway tomorrow. The Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 presented by Mr. Clean at Chicagoland Speedway will air Sunday afternoon, Sept. 10th, at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) on ABC Sports, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Qualifying/Practice Results and Quotes: (Sept. 9, 2006)
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone Starting Position: 7th Qualifying Speed: 213.024 mph average Top Speed in Practice: 213.778 mph Overall Rank in Practice: 10th on speed chart Pole Position: Sam Hornish, Jr. (No. 6 -- Marlboro Team Penske)
On qualifying: "Qualifying went okay. It wasn't too bad. The track felt a little bit slick out there for me, but all in all we are pretty happy with the run. Qualifying in the top-ten puts us in a good position for tomorrow's race so I'm happy."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone Starting Position: 12th Qualifying Speed: 212.093 mph Top Speed in Practice: 213.941 mph Overall Rank in Practice: 9th on speed chart Pole Position: Sam Hornish, Jr. (No. 6 -- Marlboro Team Penske)
On qualifying and practice: "The conditions changed a bit and that really caught us out. Coming out for qualifying I thought we had a sixth place car so I'm pretty disappointed with how things turned out. The weather can do that to you sometimes so that's just how it goes. But, the car was really good in practice and good in traffic so when the race gets going we'll just have to drive our way to the front."
