Kanaan Drives Team 7-Eleven Car to Seventh-Place Finish at Chicagoland Speedway
JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 10, 2006) -Tony Kanaan piloted the #11 Team 7-Eleven car to a seventh-place finish Sunday afternoon at the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway, the season-finale for the IndyCar Series.
Starting from 13th place on the starting grid, Kanaan wasted little time in moving towards the front, claiming fifth place by lap nine, and remained among the top-six contenders throughout the event. Unfortunately, the Team 7-Eleven can didn't have the outright speed to remain with the fastest three cars and he ultimately dropped one lap off the pace. Over the final 25 laps of the event he engaged in a strong five-car battle between Ed Carpenter, Vitor Meira, Jeff Simmons and Scott Sharp for fifth through ninth positions, with Kanaan eventually finishing in seventh place.
Dan Wheldon took the victory with Scott Dixon second, Sam Hornish Jr. third, Helio Castroneves fourth and Carpenter fifth. Hornish earned his third IndyCar Series championship. Kanaan concludes the season sixth in the driver point standings with 384 points, 27 behind fifth place Meira and 91 points behind Hornish.
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "It was a long day. I don't think we had anything for the leaders. I've never gone a lap down under normal racing circumstances so this was disappointing. On the other hand, all the guys at Team 7-Eleven did a great job. They gave me a good car and we did the best we could do."
Kim Green, President, Andretti Green Racing: "We certainly didn't have a fast enough car to win today, but Tony drove the usual fantastic race. He made a fantastic start and the crew was unbelievable in the pits; I'm very proud of everyone at Team 7-Eleven. It was just a tough race at the end when track position became an issue. We got the best out of the race car; we just need to get ourselves a faster race car. We'll come back with a lot of determination in 2007."
