Fort Worth, TX (October 5, 2001) - Eddie Cheever Jr. will start eighth at Saturday's Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway after qualifying was canceled due to rain and wet track conditions. The starting lineup was set by entrant points, in accordance with Indy Racing League rules.
A brief practice session was conducted late Friday afternoon, with a two-hour practice scheduled for 8:30am-10:30am on Saturday morning prior to the race.
ESPN2 will broadcast the final round of the 2001 Indy Racing Northern Light Series live at 3:00pm Central time on October 6.
Eddie Cheever Jr. (on Friday's rain-shortened schedule): "Unfortunately, it was a cold, windy waste of a day. The only information I gathered today was that I wished I'd worn two pairs of long underwear instead of one. We had the race engine in for practice today and we're ready for tomorrow."
New Paint Scheme Demonstrates Support for American Red Cross: The #51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti will sport a special red, white and blue "Stars and Stripes" paint scheme for this weekend's Chevy 500. The racecar will carry a prominent American Red Cross logo and a "1-800-HELP-NOW" decal in view of the in-car camera.
Bicycling with Cheever Benefits Speedway Children's Charities: While no Indy Racing drivers turned any official laps Friday morning, Eddie Cheever Jr. was on track early -- albeit not in his Infiniti-powered racecar. The 1998 Indianapolis 500 Champion cycled around the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval with Bill Marshall. Marshall's wife, Bobbie, donated $2100 to Speedway Children's Charities in exchange for a bicycle and the opportunity to bike with Eddie. Mrs. Marshall, a Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) Board Member, was the highest bidder for the item at last month's SCC Gala. In four years of raising funds for the children of North Texas, Speedway Children's Charities (Texas Chapter) has distributed over $1,060,000 to local children's organizations.
Associate sponsors of Cheever Indy Racing include Infiniti, Firestone, Menards, Bosch, True Grit, and Eviciti.
