Charlotte, NC, May 1 - There were no fireworks, there were no victory lane celebrations, there were no cheers after the checkered flag fell. There were only tears and hugs of comfort as tonight's race was halted after a tragic accident on lap 61. The cars circulated the track for another 18 laps before officials stopped the race. Fans in attendance applauded politely as track president H.A. Wheeler announced that the race was being cancelled in respect for spectators involved in the tragedy.

Tony George, founder of the Indy Racing League, said "We extend our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and injured in the tragic incident during this evening's race. Our prayers and sympathies are with them during this difficult time.

Reverend Mark Wingler of IRL Ministry held a prayer service in the garage which was attended by most of the teams and officials.
