Calkins Closes On Record

SPARTA, KY, Sunday, August 12, 2001 - Buzz Calkins closed on his own record of consecutive races running at the finish today at the Kentucky Speedway. The Belterra Casino Indy 300 marked the Denver driver's 12th consecutive checkered flag dating back to this event last August. His current record of 13 could be tied at the upcoming event at Gateway International Raceway on August 26th. Today's Northern Light Series race, Buzz's 50th career Indy Racing start, is the 1996 IRL co-champion's 39th career event running at the finish. Calkins started 19th and finished 16th in the 200 lap, 300 mile event.

"The finish isn't what we wanted but we brought it home," said Calkins. "The car was pretty good in the middle of the run. As we burned fuel off the Bradley Food Marts/Sav-O-Mat Dallara the car got a lot better over the bumps. We had a push pretty consistently all afternoon but it was the worst right after a (pit) stop. I was resting my elbow up against the cockpit to try and hold the car over the bumps when the fuel load was heavy."

Calkins finish also kept him seventh in Northern Light Series point with 192 markers. There are three events remaining in the 2001 season.

Bradley Motorsports' team manager and chief engineer David Cripps: "I am happy we continued our streak of finishes, certainly. This was not the result we hoped for but I feel like we are getting closer to the setup issue. We worked hard to improve the Bradley car all weekend but we didn't make the gains quickly enough to keep up with the competition. We are going to test this week to resolve our setup issues and get Buzz back up to where we think he should be."

"We did get to the checkered and that is good for the points," reviewed the University of Colorado graduate. "I'm eager to get to St. Louis."

Bradley Petroleum operates gasoline and convenience stores in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming under the Bradley Food Marts, Sav-O-Mat and Sinclair names.
