Buhl piloted the Purex G-Force/Infiniti during the session while Calkins wheeled the Bradley Food Marts/Sav-O-Mart Dallara/Oldsmobile. Both drivers were impressed with the newly repaved speedway surface.

"The new surface is great," said Buhl. "We were 2½ miles per hour faster right at the start of the practice within the first five laps. It is incredible. It will be very interesting to see the competition in the race.

"We were focusing on different chassis setups that we may utilize in the race. We weren't concentrating on the Infiniti engine today, it has been very successful on mile-and-a-half tracks this year."

"Our team accomplished what we came to do," commented Calkins. "We wanted to shake down the cars for next week. We ran about 70 laps, had several laps in the 215 mph range. We used a six-month old engine for the test today; we will have a new one for the race. I feel great going into next weekend."
