Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, Texas - June 5, 2003
Officials at the Texas Motor Speedway have erected a banner on the back of victory lane commemorating the first night race for the IndyCar Series. The Michael Andretti Foundation donated $5,000 to the University of North Texas to implement Alcohol 101 Plus, an education program that helps college students make safe and responsible decisions regarding alcohol use. The program is made possible in part by Jim Beam Brands, Inc, a sponsor on Dan Wheldon's Honda- powered Dallara. Jim Beam Brands donated $100,000.00 to the Michael Andretti Foundation as part of its ongoing "Drink Smart" program.
Of the 11 races held at Texas Motor Speedway, seven have been decided by less than one second. Sam Hornish crossed the finish line 0.0096 of a second ahead of Helio Castroneves the last time the series visited the track.
In order to lower speeds, Indy Racing League officials mandated the use of wicker bills on the fences on either side of the rear wing. The wicker bills, which measure approximately 10 inches in length, are mounted vertically on the trailing edge of each rear wing fence. Tomas Scheckter earned the pole position for this race as well as last year's June race. His pole speed was 219.300 mph this year while last year's pole speed was 220.146 mph.
