This is the 18th IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. Leading to this event, Scott Sharp started in 17 races at Texas, notching 7 top fives and 10 top ten finishes. Sharp along with Helio Castroneves, Sam Hornish Jr. and Scott Goodyear sit atop the all time win list at Texas with two victories. Tomas Scheckter holds the record for laps led at 371. In seven starts, Scheckter has earned three poles and one top five finish, a victory in 2005.

The IndyCar Series made its first appearance at Texas Motor Speedway on June 7, 1997 in a race won by Arie Luyendyk. Starting in 1998 the series made two visits to TMS each year, a practice that continued until 2004.

Nine sets of Firestone tires have been distributed to each car at Texas. The tire, which is new to this speedway, has been used in competition at Homestead-Miami and Kansas Speedway.

Scottish Parliament honored Dario Franchitti for his victory in the 91st Indianapolis 500. MSP Jamie McGrigor proposed the following motion: "That the Parliament congratulate Scotland's Dario Franchitti on winning the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 in the United States of America, part of the IndyCar Series and one of the most famous motor races in the world; notes that, in doing so, he became the first Scot to win the race since Jim Clark in 1965, and wishes Dario every success in continuing to fly the flag for Scotland in the USA."

Scott Dixon's Target Ganassi Racing car is sporting a new blue color scheme this weekend with sponsorship on the sidepods from Commit nicotine lozenges.

Banners displayed around the speedway tout the "Tale of the Tape" featuring the vital statistics of Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick. Patrick confronted Wheldon on pit lane after the Milwaukee race last weekend after disagreeing with his actions in a Turn one incident. The pair made slight contact, which league officials deemed as a racing incident. Always the consummate promoter, Eddie Gossage is seen on one "Tale of the Tape" banner pictured with boxing promoter Don King.
