Helio Castroneves made his post race fence climbing debut at Detroit on June 18, 2000, earning the nickname Spiderman. The following year he repeated the feat at Detroit after leading flag to flag. Castroneves has climbed the fence once this year when he won at St. Petersburg, scoring his second consecutive victory on the Florida temporary circuit.

Gil de Ferran is attending the race this weekend. "I really used to enjoy coming to Belle Isle to compete, so it's nice to be back," de Ferran said. "Roger (Penske) has done a great job promoting the race and taking this facility to a whole new level."

Add another Andretti. Adam Andretti, the younger brother of John Andretti passed his Indy Pro Series rookie test at Chicagoland Speedway on August 30. Andretti is slated to drive the No. 44 SpeedWorks car at the Pro Series season finale next weekend.

The raceway at Belle Isle has seen vast improvements since automobile racing took place on the island in 2001. Most noticeable is the concrete paddock area which is home to the IndyCar Series and ALMS teams this weekend. Also noticeable is the large increase in hospitality chalets. With driver motor coaches near Turn 6 and team hospitality relegated to an area adjacent to the coaches, prime areas have been opened up near the paddock. In addition to the chalets near the paddock, festive tents ring the large fountain near the southern tip of the island. In addition to the large number of seats in the hospitality areas, nearly 25,000 grandstand seats have been erected.

Four teams have advanced to the final round of the third annual Klein Tools Pit Stop Competition to be held Oct. 19 at Laguna Seca. The four teams, in order of fast pit stop times set at Detroit, are Corvette Racing No. 4, Corvette Racing No. 3, Dyson Racing No. 20 and Dyson Racing No. 16.

Honda in the Hoosier state - Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN) began accepting applications for production positions last Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007. Applications can be submitted to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development through Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007 with the first phase of hiring beginning later this year. HMIN will employ approximately 2,000 associates when the automobile plant in Greensburg reaches full production. Applications will be accepted only on-line at the Web site: www.indiana.honda.com.

Famous for presenting the stunning silver award to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 each year, BorgWarner was recently recognized by Nissan North America. The auto manufacturer recognized BorgWarner with its Regional Supplier Quality Award, presently jointly to BorgWarner Morse TEC in Ithaca, New York, which supplies timing chains, and BorgWarner Thermal Systems in Fletcher, North Carolina, which produces fan assemblies. BorgWarner recently announced that its all-wheel drive technology would be supplied as optional equipment on the 2008 Cadillac CTS. The system, which features an InterActive Torque Management Transfer Case, works in cooperation wi th other vehicle systems like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability programs.

Long known for their spark plugs, Bosch will be showcasing their advanced clean diesel technology during Labor Day weekend on the Raceway at Belle Isle in Detroit. Bosch will serve as presenting sponsor for the Detroit Sports Car Challenge, which is round 10 of the 12-race American Le Mans Series racing schedule. Bosch's involvement in the American Le Mans Series began in 2006 through its partnership with Audi Motorsports and the Audi R10 TDI. Supplied by Bosch, the specially adjusted high-pressure pumps and piezo-inline injectors for the diesel common rail injection system have played a key role in the on-going suc cess for the Audi R10.

Looking good - If the Gabriel Richard Park, located on Jefferson Avenue, near the bridge to Belle Isle looks clean this weekend, thank the management staff f rom AAA Michigan. More than 40 vice presidents, district managers and directors spent their Wednesday morning cleaning up the area as part of their day of service. AAA Michigan is the volunteer sponsor for the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix and more than 125 AAA Michigan employees will volunteer as courtesy shuttle workers during Grand Prix weekend.
