Atlanta, GA (April 28, 2001) - Fresh from a career best starting position (third) and a powerhouse performance from the new Infiniti 35A engine in practice, #51 Excite@Home driver Eddie Cheever Jr. was poised for a strong finish at Saturday's zMax 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway before an engine glitch ended his day on lap 34 of the 200 lap event.

Cheever captured the first Indy Racing victory for Infiniti Motorsports and the #51 Excite@Home team last season at Pikes Peak in June. The new Infiniti Indy 35A engine debuted at the 2001 Indy Racing Northern Light Series season opener at Phoenix in March. Cheever earned the powerplant's first top-ten result three weeks ago at the Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Eddie Cheever Jr.: "It's obviously not how we wanted to finish, and we're not quite sure what happened, but we think it was something in the top end of the engine. The #51 Excite@Home car had a bit of push at the beginning of the race, but I was keeping the leaders in sight and I'm sure we would have made a run at the win. It's a shame. The Infiniti engine performed flawlessly all weekend long and we were in the top three in every session. We've got a good ten days of practice at Indy before the Indianapolis 500 on May 27, so we're going to reassess some things."
