Hampton,Ga: Rookie Felipe Giaffone avoided the mayhem and battled a mechanical problem but still brought his #21 Hollywood/G-Force/Aurora/Firestone entry home tenth for Treadway-Hubbard Racing in the zMax 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway Saturday night.
Giaffone narrowly escaped a ten car pile up on lap 53 and then encountered a fuel pick up problem but he and the team worked hard to keep the #21 Hollywood car in the top ten.
"I'm happy and disappointed at the same time", said Giaffone. "Our goal was to just finish the race so we could role right into Indy and we are OK with that. But, I think I had a top three car if we didn't have the fuel pick up problem. Still, the team did a great job and we finished in the top ten again. We are right on plan going into Indy so I have to be happy about that. There are a lot of other teams that weren't so lucky tonight and have so much work to do to repair cars for Indy. I'm really happy we're not one of those teams".
Giaffone was the best qualifying and finishing rookie for the third consecutive race. He is currently fifth in the season points championship and is leading the rookie of the year points standings after 3 of the 13 IRL races in 2001. The team now begins preparations for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, The Indianapolis 500. Practice begins Sunday May 6.
