Sharp Wins in Atlanta!
1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League KOBALT MECHANICS TOOLS 500K presented by MCI WORLDCOM Atlanta Motor Speedway Hampton, Georgia Race Report – Saturday, July 17, 1999
NOTES AND QUOTES:
After qualifying sixth and driving a consistent race, Scott Sharp and the Delphi Automotive Systems team win the Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Sharp drove a steady race staying in the top ten until loosing in the pits due to an ill timed yellow flag. However, the Delphi team and Sharp battled back to claim their first win of the year and Sharp’s fourth Pep Boys Indy Racing League victory! This win is especially gratifying to the Kelley family due to their car dealership and business connections in Atlanta. Teammate, Mark Dismore ran strong in third place for the first half of the race, eventually falling back due to a broken header pipe. Dismore and the MCI WorldCom team would have been fighting for the victory had bad luck not intervened.
#8 Scott Sharp, Delphi Automotive Systems/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (Finished 1st; average speed 141.546 mph; Overall championship position: 2nd) “I just can’t say enough about this Delphi Automotive Systems team. We came here with a totally new and untested set-up, and these guys and my engineer, Will Moody, made a lot of changes and in the end it all worked awesome! I just love coming to Atlanta; this is my favorite of the 1.5-mile tracks. I prayed on every lap out there tonight. Hat’s-off effort to our entire team.”
#28 Mark Dismore, MCI WorldCom/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (Finished 17th; average speed 126.386 mph; Overall championship position: 10th) “We had a super strong car, and the MCI WorldCom team worked their tails off. Our bad luck just caught us again with a broken header pipe, but the guys did a great job replacing it and salvaging a finish for the Kelley team. I’m just happy for the Kelley’s and the entire MCI WorldCom and Delphi Automotive Systems teams. We all needed that for the team, and the MCI WorldCom team’s turn to win is coming soon.”
Tom Kelley, team owner “Dad and I are very proud of Scott and the entire Delphi and MCI WorldCom teams. This is a total team effort. It’s a great win for the Kelley team especially since Atlanta is like a second home for us because of our car dealerships.”
Next race action for the Kelley Racing team will be at the “Monster Mile” in Dover, Delaware. Driver Scott Sharp will be looking to repeat as a winner for the Sunday race scheduled for August 1, and can be seen live on FOX Sports Net.
