DISMORE AND SHARP HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR ATLANTA
Race Advance Kobalt Mechanic Tools 500 presented by MCI WorldCom Atlanta Motor Speedway / Hampton, Georgia July 15-17, 1999
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 13, 1999) -- Kelley Racing and the driving duo of Mark Dismore and Scott Sharp gear-up for Round Seven of the 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Championship series. The Kobalt Mechanic Tools 500 presented by MCI Worldcom is scheduled to take place this weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia. Last year, Dismore and Sharp started in fifth and third positions on the 1.5-mile quad oval. Dismore finished seventh, while teammate Sharp encountered gearbox problems and pulled out on lap 135 where he ended the day in 18th place. Finishing well for the American drivers could most definitely set the tone for the remainder of their championship chase.
Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Automotive Systems/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear car (Currently fifth in championship / 109 points): "I'm really pumped up to be going back to Atlanta. We ran extremely well last year until something out of our control took us out of the race. The track is similar to Texas and Charlotte. We ran great in Texas. I think the Delphi team has a chance to win this race. My comfort level with my new engineer, Will Moody, is increasing every time we take to the track. The team atmosphere has been positive and everyone is reaching for high goals for the race. We're tied for fifth place in the championship. The next five races are crucial. I believe with a win and a little luck, we'll be right there for the championship."
Mark Dismore, #28 MCI WorldCom/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear car (Currently seventh in championship / 107 points): "The MCI WorldCom team should do well this race weekend. We had the fastest car there last year. During the race, we were a half lap down due to pitting under green to make a minor adjustment to the car. The car was vibrating really terrible. We came back and posted the fastest laps. We just needed some more time out there. This year, we're going back to Atlanta with a competitive set-up. I'm confident we will have a fighting chance. On the track, there is a lot of room for wheel-to-wheel racing. There's no reason in my mind why we can't win the next five races. We just need to have a few things fall into place."
Tom Kelley, Team Owner - "I'm really excited to be back at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. We feel like this place owes us one. We have several Kelley Automotive dealerships in Atlanta, and we look forward to a successful race weekend. This is like a hometown race for us."
