Gearbox problems plague Cheever's drive to a top finish, but inches him closer in the drive to the Championship
Atlanta, GA. - Eddie Cheever and his #51 Children's Beverage Group/Team Cheever Dallara/Goodyear/Infiniti Indy racing team finished sixth in this evening's Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Starting from the eleventh row and the twenty-first spot, Cheever, plagued with clutch problems all night, worked his way up the pack no less than six times until clinching his sixth place finish on lap 208.
"The throttle just wasn't smooth and I stripped a gear on the first stop," explained Cheever. "The guys did a great job tonight of keeping me coming back each time. They got me out of the pits three times with me starting in third gear each time."
It was indeed a roller coaster ride for Cheever as he worked his way up the field to a top ten position, and then, drop back dramatically after each of the team's six pit stops. By the end of the evening, Cheever was running at a pace close to that of the leaders without his third and sixth gears.
"This is the third race in a row that I've had to beat the Infiniti engine up badly and it has held up exceptionally well," said Cheever of his long battle on the 1.54-mile superspeedway. "I was hoping to find a dancing partner tonight to ease things along, but no one would play with me tonight. On a track like this, running alone works everything way too hard."
With the Atlanta result, Cheever still ranks fourth in the drive for the Championship (149) but is now only 31 points from leader Scott Goodyear (180), ten from Scott Sharp (159) and four from third place Jeff Ward (153). The Mid-Atlantic 200, round 7 of the 10-race Pep Boys Indy Racing League series, will be held on Sunday, August 1st at Dover Downs International Speedway. The race will be televised on the Fox Television Network at 4pm EDT.
"I know going into each one of our races that everyone on this team is giving everything in his power to secure a win for us," said Cheever. "But, winning cannot be the only judge of our success; it is also about the effort that goes into achieving it. We gained a big step on the Championship tonight and we did it with a strong team effort."
