Erwin brought out the first yellow of the zMax 400 Indy Racing League Northern Light Series race when he spun in turn three on lap five, hitting the outside wall and then drifting down to the bottom of the track. The damage to the left side of the McCormack Motorsports G-Force Oldsmobile Firestone #30 was substantial enough that the team couldn't continue, and Erwin ended up 27th in the final rundown.

"The car was a little twitchy and it just turned away from me," the 25-year-old rookie said. "I think the car just had a little too much downforce in the front end. It got twitchy and I just couldn't hold onto it. There was no warning; it just jumped out on me.

"I hit the outside wall with my left front and then spun down across the track. I don't think anybody else was involved; I hope not. My right knee is a little banged up, but I'm OK. It felt like it hit pretty hard."

The race's start was delayed by rain, but Erwin said he didn't think the track conditions had anything to do with his problem.

"Our race was way too short," he summarized. "Now we have to put this behind us and focus on making the 500. Hopefully we got our bad luck out of the way here."

Erwin now heads to Indianapolis where he will attempt to make the field and participate in the world's largest single-day sporting event, the Indianapolis 500, on May 27.
