IMS UNVEILS ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY: #51 Excite@Home driver Eddie Cheever Jr. was on hand at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Wednesday morning for a "power breakfast" hosted by IMS president and CEO Tony George to present the results of the Speedway's first economic impact study.
According to the report - which was conducted by Mark Rosentraub, professor and associate dean of Indiana University's school of public and environmental affairs - the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and the SAP United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway add $727 million to the Central Indiana economy each year.
"From my point of view as a racing driver, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is where it all began 85 years ago," Cheever told the community leaders who attended the breakfast. "Now, with the USGP at Indianapolis, Formula One not only has a very strong partner in the Speedway, but it is also competing at the greatest racing facility in the world. The USGP will be a very fun, very special event, and the whole world will be focused on Indy for that weekend."
The inaugural SAP United States Grand Prix Formula One race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is scheduled for September 24.
CHEEVER "PACES" BUSH'S ARRIVAL IN INDY: 1998 Indianapolis 500 Champion Eddie Cheever Jr. welcomed Texas Governor George W. Bush to Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon at a political rally at the city's airport.
Cheever drove the 1998 Indianapolis 500 pace car which led Bush's motorcade to the gathering, and greeted the presidential candidate on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prior to Bush's address. Cheever's #51 Excite@Home Indy Race Car was displayed on the stage during the event.
TEXAS TESTING: Cheever and his #51 Excite@Home crew will conduct a two-day test at Texas Motor Speedway on September 19 and 20 in preparation for the Indy Racing Northern Light Series season finale, the Excite 500 scheduled for October 15.
Cheever is one of only three drivers in contention for the 2000 Indy Racing title with 217 points, forty-one points behind series leader Buddy Lazier and only three points behind Scott Goodyear.
Primary Sponsorship of the #51 Indy Car comes from Excite@Home. The company is based in Redwood City, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley. Associate Sponsors of Team Cheever include Infiniti, Firestone, Indy Promotional Products, Menards, Bosch, and Pennzoil.
