Twin Ring Motegi, IRL announce Indy Week in Japan.

TOKYO, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002 -- Twin Ring Motegi will play host to "Indy Week" on April 5-13, 2003, track officials announced during a press conference Nov. 6 in Tokyo.

"Indy Week" is a festival of events designed to capture the excitement of the inaugural Indy Racing event in Japan on April 13 at Twin Ring Motegi. The festival will include activities such as pit stop competitions, a car exhibition, kart challenge, driver appearances and autograph sessions.

"Our goal is to work together with Twin Ring Motegi to create awareness for the first Indy Racing League event in Japan on April 13," said Tony George, Indy Racing League president and CEO. "This press conference was an opportunity to have the media come together to help launch Indy Racing in Japan."

More than 450 members of the Japanese motorsports industry, including media, sponsors and competitors, attended the press conference, which took place at Tokyo's famous Imperial Hotel.

George, two-time Indy Racing champion Sam Hornish Jr., Andretti-Green Racing driver Dario Franchitti and IRL Senior Vice President of Operations Brian Barnhart participated in the ceremonies.

Hornish, who is driving Nov. 7-8 in the first IRL test at Twin Ring Motegi, a 1.5-mile oval located in Motegi, Japan, was impressed with the media turnout.

"The whole day went very smooth," Hornish said. "It was amazing how many people were there. Everything was very, very organized.

"It's my first trip to Japan, and I haven't seen much of the country yet, but everyone is very polite and courteous. It's really a neat deal."
