Matsuura Qualifies 13th; Meira Will Start 18th After Qualification Spin
Mutoh Qualifies Ninth for Mid-Ohio 100
LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 21, 2007) -- Super Aguri Panther Racing driver Kosuke Matsuura qualified 13th Saturday afternoon for the Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio, where the Japanese driver will attempt to better his last finish on a road course -- an eighth place result at Watkins Glen International Raceway.
The Watkins result was his best finish of the season and his second Top Ten in 2007.
Delphi Panther driver Vitor Meira had nearly completed a lap that could have potentially put him in the Firestone Fast Six, but coming into the last corner of Mid-Ohio's 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course, the No. 4 car's left-rear wheel made contact with the curbing, sending Vitor spinning into the sand.
He will start 18th and look to drive his car to the front of the field, much like the Brazilian did earlier this season at Watkins Glen, where he led a total of eight laps.
The Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio will be broadcast live Sunday on ABC at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network and XM Satellite Radio channels 144 and 145.
Mutoh Will Start Ninth in Mid-Ohio 100
Panther Indy Pro Series driver Hideki Mutoh will start ninth tomorrow in the Mid-Ohio 100, where the rookie driver will shoot for his second victory of the season.
Mutoh has started inside the Top Ten at every event this season, and all but one of his 11 starts has resulted in a Top Ten finish. Hideki has been strongest on the road course events this season, finishing on the podium in four of his six starts on non-oval tracks.
"When it's a one-lap qualification you either go for it or you don't, and I decided to go for it. I was trying to improve and capitalize and get a really good lap time for the Panther guys. It didn't work out. I know the Delphi car is going to be good in the race and we've all got our work cut out for us, but it's a long race, our pit stops have been good this year and a lot can happen."
"We struggled to find a qualifying setup in the Panasonic car and we're not happy with the result but the race is different. I've raced many road-courses and I am finally feeling comfortable on the course so I should be able to do better tomorrow. I like the track and enjoy driving here so hope I do well in the race."
"We couldn't find a good setup for the qualifying session and it ended up being so the car was loose in rear. We changed the setup after the qualifying session for the practice session, and the car was much better. I am starting from the 9th and it is not a position I wanted to be but we should be able to do well and hopefully be able to pass few cars in front of me."
