Notes and quotes from the Firestone Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Bobby Unser presented Tomas Scheckter with the Bobby Unser Pole Award after the young South African driver earned his second pole at the 2-mile super speedway. Scheckter's pole speed was 222.458 mph. Unser is at the Firestone Indy 400 promoting his new book "Winners are Driven."
Gil De Ferran received a special Thronton Bardach ring today to celebrate his win in the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500. Nearly sixty years ago, Tony Hulman consulted with Indianapolis jeweler Thorton Bardach on the design of a ring to represent the Indianapolis 500. Their design included a checkered flag with five diamonds, each representing one hundred miles. De Ferran will also receive a Herff Jones winners ring from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
With each team receiving nine sets of tires for the weekend, Firestone delivered 888 superspeedway tires to the speedway. Superspeedway tires are the most durable tires available from the manufacturer. Compared to short oval tires, superspeedway tires must absorb the greatest constant speeds and higher g-force loads in the corners. This compound, used at the "Test in the West" at Fontana, is being used in a race for the first time this season.
G. J. Mennen, who finished eighth in the Infiniti Pro Series last year will do double duty this weekend. Mennen will compete in the Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday and the Infiniti Pro Series race on Sunday.
