IRL Announces Dates For Preseason and 2005 Open Testing
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, Oct.19, 2004 -- Continuing the testing rules introduced in 2004, Indy Racing League® drivers and teams will participate in four Open Tests during the 2005 season, league officials announced.
Open Tests for IRL teams begin with the preseason tests at Homestead-Miami Speedway (Jan. 18-22) and Phoenix International Raceway (Feb. 4-6).
The IRL IndyCar® Series and the IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series will practice on both the 1.5-mile oval and 2.21-mile road course at Homestead. Oval testing will take place on Jan. 18-19, while road-course testing will occur Jan. 20-22. The Menards Infiniti Pro Series will practice on the first day of each scheduled test.
Open Tests are also scheduled at two of the three new venues on the IRL schedule. A two-day Open Test is slated for April 12-13 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. IndyCar Series and Menards Infiniti Pro Series teams are scheduled to participate.
The IndyCar Series will have a one-day Open Test on June 15 at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y. The Menards Infiniti Pro Series will not participate in that test due to its race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but an additional test may be announced at a later date.
"With the testing policy introduced before the 2004 season, Open Testing is extremely important, especially at the new venues we will visit in 2005." said Brian Barnhart, IRL Senior Vice President for Racing Operations. "These tests continue the league's goal of containing the costs associated with running in our series."
Engine manufacturers will be allowed three testing days during the 2005 season. Two test days are reserved for oval venues scheduled for two-day events. Those tracks are: Richmond International Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, Pikes Peak International Raceway, Chicagoland Speedway, Michigan International Speedway and Kentucky Speedway.
The other test day will be reserved for an IRL-approved road course.
The 2005 IRL IndyCar Series season opens March 6 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The 2005 IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series season also begins March 6 at Homestead-Miami Speedway
