IndyCar Series Qualifications Cancelled Due to Rain, Putting Meira in 12th

NEWTON, Iowa. (June 21, 2008) -- A rain storm immediately following the Indy Lights race ended IndyCar Series qualifications after only drivers Dan Wheldon and Ryan Briscoe made attempts, forcing the field for tomorrow's race to align by points standings. That puts Meira in a 12th place starting position, after the team's veteran driver was near the top of the speed chart all weekend.

Ironically, Meira's starting position tomorrow will be one spot better than where he rolled off last season at Iowa, when he nearly won his first race in the inaugural event at the 7/8-mile oval. A suspension failure ended his day in ninth.

The Iowa Corn Indy 250 will be broadcast live on ABC at 1 p.m. (ET) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network, IndyCar.com and XM Satellite Radio channel 144 and 145.

Vitor Meira, No. 4 Delphi National Guard:

"There is no doubt this rainout hurts us. I had a top five car. Now we're stuck in the middle of the field, and our Delphi National Guard car is one of the quickest cars out there. But we'll make it work. It's been a little tough to pass out there, but our car is really strong. We're going to be good, I was just excited to qualify today because our car is so fast."
