Justin enjoys strong run to 12th in Iowa
Justin put in a strong performance in the Iowa Corn 250 at Iowa Speedway, finishing 12th after starting 20th and running in the top ten for a good portion of the race. Fellow Briton Dan Wheldon (Chip Ganassi Racing) took victory after a late-race fuel gamble to stay out on track while most of the other drivers pitted. Andretti Green Racing team-mates Hideki Mutoh and Marco Andretti rounded out the top three.
On the start, Justin took the high line and was able to gain four positions on the opening lap and another two on the following one, before settling into 14th place before the first caution period (Laps 39-50).
"We managed to get through the first lap quite well," said Justin. "A few people had some problems and they all got stacked up on the bottom of the track. I had a clear route on the top and just took everything I could from the situation."
After the re-start, Justin gained further positions and was running comfortably in 10th place. A quick stop by the McDonald's team during the second caution period (Laps 103-110) moved him up to eighth place, and he gained another spot on the restart. Justin stayed in seventh place for 10 laps, before dropping back to 9th when the field made their third pit stop during the caution on Laps 157-165.
Justin continued to run strongly in 9th when he pitted with most of the field for the final time under the fourth caution on Laps 188-195. The deciding moment of the race came when Wheldon, Mutoh and his Andretti Green Racing team-mate Danica Patrick (who had been running in 6th, 10th and 12th places respectively) stayed out on track, gambling that there would be another extended caution period late in the race, saving enough fuel to get them to the finish. In the end, hard contact with the wall by Tony Kanaan (Andretti Green Racing) on Lap 212 gave Wheldon enough low-speed laps under caution to allow the strategy to pay off.
After the final restart Justin worked his way up to 11th and he took the chequered flag in 12th. His Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing team-mate Graham Rahal, who had been stuck in the mid-field for much of the race, enjoyed a strong car in the final stint to pass Justin with nine laps to go.
"It was an interesting race," said Justin. "The McDonald's car was really good early on in the race and I was able to pass on restarts and pass people on the track; I was enjoying it! We keep learning. It was a good result."
Justin's 18 points move him up one position to 19th place in the IndyCar Series point standings with a total of 135.
