Justin finishes 12th in Iowa Corn Indy 250
Justin and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing finished a frustrated 12th in Saturday night's Iowa Corn Indy 250, keeping their nose clean in a caution-filled race but struggling for the necessary pace to run at the sharp end. Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) won the event, with Tony Kanaan (KV Racing) runner-up and Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Raing) rounding out the podium. Justin's team-mate Ana Beatriz (23rd) was forced to retire with crash damage on Lap 44 after her No. 24 Ipiranga car got loose over the notorious Turn 2 bump.
After qualifying 12th, Justin ran as high as P10 during his first stint, but the No. 22 car lacked the balance needed to make further progress and started to slip back as each stint wore on. He pitted from 12th under the first yellow caution period on Lap 26, emerged from the stop in P11, held the position as the race restarted, but again the No. 22 car dropped back to P13 by the time of the second pit stops on Lap 61. Justin was P15 after his second stop, gained two spots on his third pit stop on Lap 95 (again under yellow), but again the car was unable to gain traction and it was a question of hanging on to the lead lap.
Justin pitted under yellow for the penultimate time on Lap 117 from P15, and made up some ground through the stops and following the Lap 129 restart. After the final pit stop on Lap 187, Justin filtered out to P10. He had another good restart, taking P9 on Lap 200, but once again the pace was not sustainable and in the end he had to settle for 12th at the chequered flag.
"It was a long night,” said Justin. “We got some good restarts and pit stops, but the car wasn’t flowing quite as well as it needed to through the centre of the corner. We just tried to hang onto it and get the best result that we could. Now we’ll have a break to regroup and get ready for Toronto.”
