Disappointing Early End To Conquest Racing's Day

Conquest Racing saw a promising race day end early at the Honda Indy Toronto. Driver Sebastian Saavedra ran fourth-quick in the pre-race warm-up session at Exhibition Place on Sunday morning and started the 85-lap race from the 15th spot.

Saavedra was keeping pace with the leaders, climbing his way as high as sixth as other teams began making green flag pit stops. The team had delayed making its pit stop to change from red to black tires so the IZOD IndyCar series rookie could gain positions, when an untimely full-course caution on Lap 31 hurt their strategy and the No. 34 Bogota es Mundial car lost several positions pitting under the yellow.

Contact with EJ Viso on the restart forced the 34 car back into the pits for a front wing change. A second incident involving contact with Ana Beatriz’s car put the Conquest Racing entry into the runoff and out of the race early.

Sebastian Saavedra, No. 34 Conquest Racing
"That was a bit of a bummer! The race was going just incredible. We were very fortunate in the first stint staying up with the front guys and climbing positions. We did a good job running with the leaders and it was fun racing with Helio and Bourdais. We were exactly where we needed to be, unfortunately our strategy was hurt by a yellow at the wrong time. We couldn’t get to the tire change we needed so badly, and lost an incredible amount of positions. That put us in the back where no one had any respect for anyone. It was one of those races where you just needed to survive.

I have to give complete credit to the team for working hard. After the situation with the engine at the beginning of the weekend, the whole team worked together. We had a great warm-up this morning. I’m very happy about the information we’re starting to find right now. It’s good to know that we are back on track. There’s still a long way to go in the season, and we’re looking forward to putting together a good show for Edmonton.”

Eric Bachelart, Conquest Racing Team Owner
“I’m glad that we made a good step forward in our performance. We had a good car this weekend. Sebastian drove well and was very focused. We had good luck during the beginning of the race, but unfortunately we then had a bit of bad luck with the yellow. We didn’t have the finish that we were looking for, but we are confident that it’s going to come soon.”
