SAAVEDRA DRIVES TO TOP 15 FINISH IN CAUTION-FILLED RACE AT NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Conquest Racing’s Sebastian Saavedra drove his way to a 15th place finish in the caution-filled MoveThatBlock.com Indy 225 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The race saw seven yellow flags, two for rain, that left fewer than 10 drivers on the lead lap when IZOD IndyCar officials called the race. Saavedra, who qualified 24th, ran a mature race and quickly made his way into the top 20.
“We knew there were going to be lots of cautions in this race,” Saavedra said. “We just kept at it out there, and had great pit stops and good strategy that helped us gain some positions. We kept moving forward and took advantage of some of the yellows as more people were crashing.”
A good call from his spotter helped him safely through a multi-car crash on the front stretch in a controversial restart on lap 217 with moisture still on the track.
“Towards the end of race, I was maintaining good pace,” Saavedra said. “When the caution came out on Lap 206 for rain, I was pretty sure it would end that way. On that last restart, it was a crash waiting to happen. Thanks to the good call from my spotter, we survived it. I kept it pretty clean, with a little contact with Carpenter, but no damage. I was able to drive through the crash with Danica, Power, and Sato.”
The race was red flagged with five laps to go. When the checkered flag was shown, IndyCar officials made the call to revert to the race order that was shown before the final restart, as some drivers and teams openly expressed their emotions over the racing conditions.
“This is one of those races where we are still trying to figure out what happened,” Saavedra said. “It was very crazy, but in the end we survived and gained some points in the championship. We also ran some competitive lap times during the last part of the race, I’m happy to bring the No. 34 Conquest Racing Bogota es Mundial car home!”
