President of Honda Performance Development Art St. Cyr described it as “the worst kept secret in motorsports” as he announced to assembled media at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that Honda will continue supplying engines through 2017 with options through 2020.
Said St. Cyr, “This is a very complicated series. How do we work to expand the series, get more teams, more viewership? The way the contract is worked out it gives us more time to work out how we can work together to reach the goals we all have.”
Mark Miles CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, said: “This is something we all assumed would happen, over the last several months, but it’s nice to have the agreement season.
“Honda’s been in U.S. open-wheel since 1994 and been with the IndyCar Series itself for 13 years and it’s something we value deeply. Racing is in Honda's DNA and we’re a perfect platform for Honda to show what they do so well.”
Honda wants to know series' longterm plans
Miles observed: “It’s really important to Honda to know the direction of IndyCar in terms of what’s next in terms of future development of engines and cars which we think we will have a lot of clarity on within the first year or two years of this extension. We’re comfortable with that.”
“I also want to say how much we value the role that they fill so well as sponsors of three of our Verizon IndyCar Series events, and they support the commercialization of the series in so many other ways.”
Honda retains title sponsorship rights for Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the Honda Indy Toronto, sponsored by Honda Canada.
Honda has 217 Indy car wins and won 10 manufacturers' championships, including six years when it served as sole supplier to the Verizon IndyCar Series. In addition, it has scored 10 victories in the Indy 500.
