The Verizon IndyCar Series wrapped up two days of “Spring Training”, the final open test prior to the start of the 2014 race season, Tuesday at Barber Motorsports Park outside of Birmingham, Alabama. For the second consecutive season, Dale Coyne Racing’s Justin Wilson led the dozen Honda-powered entries in the 22-car field, posting a best lap time of 1:07.0646, less than four-thousandths of a second off rival Will Power’s quick time of 1:07.0608 (123.470 mph).
At the end of the two-day test, Honda and Chevrolet drivers were evenly split in the top 10 positions. Following Wilson, A.J. Foyt Racing’s Takuma Sato quick lap of 1:07.3314 around the hilly, 2.3-mile Barber circuit was fourth-fastest overall.
Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe claimed the seventh and eight positions, respectively, while Simon Pagenaud rounded out the top 10 for Honda and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with a best lap of 1:07.5235. Less than a half second separated the top 10 competitors. The 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series opens March 30 in Florida with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Mark Crawford (IndyCar Project Leader, Honda Performance Development) on this week’s test: "We’re pretty pleased with the way the last two days of testing have gone for us. We took a conservative approach to this test, as these are the same engines that will be used at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the other early-season races. So, our focus was to get everyone ready for the start of the season. We’re looking forward to it.”
