Honda Racing Report Friday, March 25, 2011 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
Power Heads Opening Day in St. Petersburg
As he demonstrated all through 2010, Will Power continues to be the man on beat on the road and street courses of the IZOD IndyCar Series, as the Team Penske driver led practice Friday at the Bayfront Park street circuit in preparation for Sunday’s season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Power led his nearest rival, two-time defending series champion Dario Franchitti, by just over a tenth of a second with Mike Conway, in his return to competition after suffering season-ending injuries at last year’s Indianapolis 500, rounding out the top three. Competition throughout the field is fierce, with just 2.4 seconds separating the 25-car field in today’s practice sessions.
Action on the 1.8-mile St. Petersburg circuit continues Saturday with Firestone “Fast Six” knockout qualifying. Green flag for Sunday’s 100-lap race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on ABC.
Will Power (#12 Team Penske Honda) quickest in Friday practice: “It was really a pretty mixed-up day for us. Ryan (Hunter-Reay) was fastest this morning, and midway through the afternoon session I clipped the wall in turn eight, damaged the right front, and we had to change the tire. We were able to get back out before the end and it was great to end the day ‘P-1’, but we have no illusions. This field is very, very close and qualifying tomorrow will be tough.”
