But we brought a strong setup here from our pre-season test and the afternoon run went very well.
Team Penske’s Will Power led a Penske and Ganassi Racing sweep of the top six positions in IZOD IndyCar Series practice Friday for Sunday’s Honda Grand Prix of Alabama. In a day when the first of two practice sessions was interrupted by a brief rain shower, Power edged Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon by less than three-tenths of a second to claim honors for the day.
Following the Penske and Ganassi drivers was Oriol Servia, leading a resurgent Newman Haas Racing, followed by Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay. James Hinchliffe led the five rookies in the field, ninth for Newman Haas, while Takuma Sato rounded out the top 10 for KV Racing Technology.
Action at the beautiful, rolling 2.3-mile Barber road course continues Saturday with Firestone “Fast Six” knockout qualifying. Sunday’s 90-lap Honda Grand Prix of Alabama is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on Versus.
Will Power (#12 Team Penske Honda) quickest in Friday practice: “I wasn’t too happy at the end of the first practice. The rain meant we really only managed to complete one short run before the end of the session. But we brought a strong setup here from our pre-season test and the afternoon run went very well. This is a great track, very smooth but technical. Just as we saw [two weeks ago] at St. Petersburg, this field is very, very close, and qualifying tomorrow will be tough.”
