Meira Finishes Tenth in IndyCar Series Opener in Homestead
Vitor Earns 50th Career Top Ten Finish to Begin 2008 Season
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 29 2008) -- After a thrilling Firestone Indy Lights victory earlier in the day, Panther was unable to go two-for-two at Homestead as driver Vitor Meira finished tenth in the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300.
The result was Meira's 50th career Top Ten finish in the IndyCar Series in 77 career starts.
Meira, who also started 10th, was able to grab two positions at the drop of the green flag and was among the front runners early. But as the race wore on, Meira's car started to get away from him and during the second stint, the No. 4 lost valuable positions, and eventually, two laps. As the race wore on and the team made valuable changes on the car, Meira's speed improved but with no cars on the same lap, he couldn't improve his position.
Now the team moves to St. Petersburg, where Meira earned his first Top Five finish of his Panther career in 2006. Meira has finished fifth at St. Pete in two of his three starts at the street course venue.
The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will be broadcast live on ESPN, indycar.com, IMS Radio Network and XM Channel 145 and XM Nation Channel 144; Qualifications live on indycar.com
"This finish is about what we expected in the Delphi National Guard car coming into the day. We knew we would have work to do during the race. We had a few problems and the car was really loose during some of the early parts of the race and that hurt us most. I could run really well by myself, but it got loose in traffic and I couldn't keep it behind other cars. Everybody at Panther is glad to head to St. Pete with a Top Ten finish and our car has always been really good there, but we will be fighting for more positions because the guys from Champ Car will be running up front there."
