The two Chip Ganassi Racing drivers will start the season finale IndyCar Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway from the front row. Title contender Dario Franchitti set the fastest time on the 1.5-mile oval in today's qualifying to land the pole by .279 seconds over his teammate Scott Dixon.

"I don't know what (crew chief) Chris Simmons did to the Target car between practice and now, but that thing was beautifully balanced," Franchitti said who added about his first timed lap: "It felt like a good lap, and I looked down and saw 213 and said: 'Oh, nice. Let's see if we can not screw up the second lap.' I felt it; I was able to take the line I wanted. Now I can relax a little."

The Scot turned a 50.1532 for a speed of 213.187 mph while the Kiwi clocked off a 50.2188 (212.908 mph). Dixon sits fouth in the standings heading into the final round while Franchitti holds second, now 11 points behind Will Power.

"It's very important. I've said all week that Will had a pretty serious advantage here," said Franchitti. "The easiest way to do it and to take all doubt out of the equation is to qualify pole, lead the most laps and win the race. It's going to be very difficult to do, but we've taken the first step."

Power will actually start the race behind his main rival for the crown. The Aussie who aims for his first IndyCar title with Team Penske had a 50.2964 (212.580 mph) to slot third on the grid.

"We just weren't quite fast enough to get pole and that definitely helps Dario, scoring the bonus point," said Power. "We're starting from the second row and we will work tonight on getting the most out of the Verizon car for Saturday night's race. We will do our absolute best to bring home the championship for Team Penske."
