Driver Dan Wheldon Completes First Day of Practice on Edmonton City Centre Airport Circuit

EDMONTON, Canada (July 23, 2010) -- The National Guard Panther Racing team completed its first day of practice Friday in preparations for this weekend's Honda Edmonton Indy, which will be held on Edmonton's City Centre Airport circuit. The 14-turn, 1.96-mile circuit is one of the most wide-open on the IZOD IndyCar Series' schedule and is the host of some of the league's most exciting non-oval racing.

Friday featured two hour-long practice sessions, where a total of 25 IndyCar Series competitors participated. Wheldon, who finished seventh in his first race at Edmonton in 2008, completed a total of 53 laps and posted a top speed of 111.145 mph, 1:03.9055 seconds.

There will be another practice session tomorrow prior to the Firestone Fast Six qualifications, which features three rounds of knockout sessions to determine the Peak Performance Pole Award. Today's practice was paced by all three drivers out of the Team Penske stable and was led by defending race winner Will Power, who was followed on the speed chart by teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves.
