Another new circuit as Justin gears up for the Detroit Indy Grand
Justin heads to Detroit for the penultimate points-scoring race of the 2008 IndyCar Series this weekend. Sunday's Detroit Indy Grand Prix Presented by Firestone is run over 90 laps at the 2.09-mile Belle Isle street course, the Raceway, in the State of Michigan.
This is another new track for Justin to learn, and although Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing has been there several times before in their previous incarnation, the circuit layout is completely different as of course are the cars.
In effect, everyone on the 02 McDonald's team will be starting with a blank sheet of paper and hoping to glean as much information as possible before the race. "The team has been here in the past" said Justin, "but that was many years ago and a lot has changed since then. I don't think there is a lot of information that will carry over so we will just have to work it out as we go along. We have been quick on all the road courses but things haven't gone our way, especially at Infineon last week (Justin finished ninth) where we were very competitive the whole weekend. I'm looking forward to getting back in the car and working hard to get a good result for the McDonald's team."
In the previous two street races this season, Justin was competitive but his results didn't reflect that. "I'm looking forward to getting back on a street circuit for the first time since Long Beach," he said. "The weekend started with pole position but engine failure ended our race early. Racing on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit should be fun and a challenge. Hopefully we will pick up where we left off with the Indy car in St. Petersburg, where we had a very quick car even though it was our first street race with the different racing package. I'll have to learn a track again but it's something I've got used to doing this year. We'll get out and go for it."
