The PDVSA HVM Racing team will start ninth in Sunday's Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. The fifth row starting position is the best for the team this season. The successful qualifying session at Detroit is a significant advantage on a track, which is considered very difficult to pass.
Driver E.J. Viso and the team advanced to the second segment after being the fifth fastest driver in his group. This allowed Viso to compete with the top 12 drivers for the chance to advance to the last segment and become one of the Firestone Fast Six qualifiers. Viso quickly posted the ninth best time, but a broken right-front suspension forced the team to end their session.
This now gives the team and Viso a great opportunity to maximize their point standings in the final two events. Viso trails Will Power by only 15 points for second in the rookie of the year chase and the team can move into the top-15 in the entrant point standings.
Comments from PDVSA HVM Racing Team Owner Keith Wiggins after qualifying at Belle Isle:
"Overall, it's a good starting position for us. We had the issue at the end of the second segment and that really didn't allow E.J. and the team to put in more laps and advance into the last group. We were fifth fastest in the morning session and might have had a chance of an even higher start.
"This is still a nice effort by the team and we're looking forward to tomorrow. We have some work to do on the car, but it's nothing major. We'll be ready and look forward to having another good race."
Comments from PDVSA HVM Racing Team Driver E.J. Viso after qualifying at Detroit:
"I think we had a really good chance to be in the last segment today and battle for the top-five starting positions. We were fast in the morning session and the changes we've been making have made us better each time.
"It's a good starting spot, and I know in the race we can be better than some of the teams in front of us. We have a good opportunity for a strong finish tomorrow."
