Conway’s weathering the storm in Barber

Mike Conway has had a very busy past few weeks. Between winning the 40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and going to the World Endurance Championship race at Silverstone, the road and street course specialist for Ed Carpenter Racing has been on the road a lot, but seems to like it that way.

““I flew back to the UK the day after because I was racing in the WEC, shame I didn’t get to race but still got to hang out, watch Toyota and seeing them win, which was good. I don’t like too much downtime to be honest with you, I like to be straight on to the next one,” Conway said.

Conway has struggled this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, but his team might have turned the corner with the setup.

“We struggled at the test and we’ve been struggling here this weekend as well but we made some changes and it did feel better in warmup this morning. It’s a shame we didn’t get more laps,” Conway said.

This is the first time he has driven the track since 2012, when he was driving for A.J. Foyt, but said that he hasn’t noticed too much has changed with the track, except for how the weather has changed the car’s handling.

“It hasn’t changed a whole lot, to be honest. The tires do change a little bit each year, so that kind of makes it tricky, but yesterday being quite hot compared to the preseason tests, the car feels quite different. A lot of people are trying different things to get the car dialed back in again,” Conway said.

Before the race, however, a massive deluge of rain has put the start of the race on hold. Conway, however, was glad for rain to arrive.

“To be honest I wanted rain, because I think it will help us out. It will be easier to pass people. I like a wet race, to be honest, but whatever comes, we still have to get to the finish, we want to keep our points position at least or try and catch Will [Power],” Conway said.”

Conway also gave an insight on how he keeps himself and the team occupied during the delay.

“We’re just keeping ourselves occupied in the office messing around watching videos and stuff.”
