A.J. Foyt team receives penalty for the size of the fuel tank size

Mike Conway took A. J. Foyt's ABC Supply Honda to their first podium of 2012 in the Honda Indy Toronto at Exhibition Place on Sunday.

Today the team's jubilation has been tempered by the announcement from INDYCAR, sanctioning body of the IZOD IndyCar series, that they have been penalized and fined for a fuel cell that failed the post-race inspection.

The No. 14 entry fined $15,000 and penalized 10 entrant points for not complying with Rule 14.7.2.

This rule is: 14.7.2 Fuel System (Updated March 15, 2012 via Bulletin) and gives the maximum capacity of the fuel cell as 18.5 U.S. Gallons.

"We felt the discrepancy in the size of the fuel tank was enough that it potentially could have provided a track position advantage and the penalty is reflective of that," said Will Phillips, vice president of technology, INDYCAR.

The team has the option to appeal the penalty as provided for in the protest and appeal procedures of the IZOD IndyCar Series Rulebook.
