Chevrolet Power Tops the Charts in IZOD IndyCar Open Test at Sebring International Raceway
SEBRING, Fla (March 6, 2012) – After two-days of open testing for the IZOD IndyCar Series at Sebring International Raceway, Chevrolet power stood at the top of the time sheets.
On Monday, Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay took the top-spot behind the wheel of the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda Chevrolet was the fastest of the field when the times for the morning and afternoon sessions were combined. Tuesday, Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves put the No. 3 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet at the top of the leader board in the combined results of the morning and afternoon sessions.
Castroneves was second quick on Monday. His teammate Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet, was just behind him on Tuesday, and the third Team Penske car, No. 2 IZOD Chevrolet driven by Ryan Briscoe, was third in Tuesday’s order.
James Hinchcliffe, No. 27 GoDaddy Chevrolet and Marco Andretti, No. 26 RC Cola Chevrolet also posted very quick times to make a strong showing for Andretti Autosport.
On Thursday, another two-day session will get underway that will include the three remaining Chevrolet organizations, KV Racing Technology, Ed Carpenter Racing and Panther Racing.
CHEVROLET DRIVER QUOTES:
WILL POWER: WHAT WAS IT LIKE GETTING OUT THERE WITH THE OTHER ENGINE MANUFACTURERS? "It is clear that it is pretty even so far. The moment of truth is going to be St. Pete. Everyone is going to have what they've got. There is no sandbagging or anything. We shall see there."
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING ON THE SHEETS FROM THE TEST WITH THE GROUP SPLIT DURING THE WEEK? "Oh, that is right. I forgot about that. Ganassi will be here Thursday. It is so hard to tell this track, to be honest. It is a very strange circuit for testing, because I don't think there is any place we go that is like it. Turn four is probably the most representative corner of a street course. Everywhere else has way too much grip, so the car always feels pretty good. I'm not sure what we get out of these tests, but we certainly push the car to the limit I would say."
ON RECOVERING FROM YESTERDAY'S FIRE TO BE ABLE TO TEST THE MAJORITY OF THE DAY: "The guys did a great job to get that engine in during the morning to get it to run before lunch for a shakedown. I got to run all afternoon. Then we had another problem right there at the end, but still got a lot of running today."
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU AND THE CHEVROLET POWER ARE READY FOR ST. PETE? "Definitely. We have just had constant improvement throughout all the testing. Every time we have a problem, that is one problem that we aren't going to have during the season. It is good to find the limits here and just understanding and studying what happened. I think we are in good shape. I really do. We got a lot of running with these engines and I think the performance is there too."
HELIO CASTRONEVES: ON THE TEST: "Overall it was a good day for the Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet. Chevy did an incredible job. We are still developing the car. Still making little bits here and there. But, for Spring Training, I thought all of the Chevys are in good shape. Overall Team Penske is in good shape. We have to just keep pushing each other. Hopefully we can get what we want for the first race of the season."
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW QUICKLY IT IS ALL COMING TOGETHER? "Yes. It was certainly a long way ahead of everybody in the beginning of all the manufacturers; but Chevy is on-board. Took the bull by the horns as they say. It is a very good commitment from everyone. Right now we are still working; still developing. Certainly it is great to be on top of the charts. But, it doesn't pay anything. The first race of the season is what we are looking for. But, it feels great to have a good practice."
RYAN BRISCOE: ON TESTING: "It was a very productive couple of days again. The more miles we get on these Chevys, the better. I feel like we're ready to go racing in St. Pete. The car is feeling strong. Working with the engine guys on the driveability side as well. I think we made a lot of gains there. I'm excited."
MARCO ANDRETTI: ON THE TESTING AND UPCOMING RACE AT ST. PETE: "We're definitely going to be gambling a little bit on setup because we've tried a bunch of different concepts, so now, it is all about picking the right one to roll off there (St. Petersburg). We have to picture the types of corners on this track that replicate over there and hopefully go with the right one. On the Chevy side, it is all good."
