Chaves to stand in for Aleshin at SPM in Phoenix test

IndyCar's 2015 Rookie of the Year Gabby Chaves will substitute for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Mikhail Aleshin in the upcoming pre-season test at Phoenix International Raceway.

Chaves, who was left without a seat for 2016 after his previous team Bryan Herta Autosport merged with Andretti Autosport to field Alexander Rossi, will pilot SPM's #7 entry in the February 26-27 test.

The team said work visa issues were to blame for Aleshin's absence from the test.

"While we wish Mikhail was able to participate in this test with us, we're confident that he'll get up to speed quickly when he returns," said SPM's Piers Phillips.

"Gabby had a solid rookie season and we appreciate his willingness to step up quickly for this important test. We have high expectations for SPM's 2016 season and our goal is to use these test days at PIR to set us up for success."

Chaves drove for SPM in Indy Lights back in 2013, securing a victory at Mid-Ohio on his way to a runner-up finish.

He would subsequently switch to Belardi and deny SPM's Jack Harvey the Lights title in 2014 on a tie-breaker.
