Justin and NHLR take provisional pole at Long Beach

Justin and Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing were immediately on the pace during the first day of running on Friday at Long Beach, scoring a provisional pole position that guarantees a front-row grid slot for the No. 02 McDonald's car in Sunday's race. Justin comfortably topped the timesheets in morning practice and during the afternoon's first qualifying session he and the team put in a consummate performance to take provisional pole with a lap of 1:07.356 (105.184 mph), 0.5 seconds ahead of KV Racing Technology's Oriol Servia (1:07.858). Justin's NHLR team-mate Graham Rahal was fifth fastest with a quick lap of 1:08.172.

"The McDonald's car was good today and I was very pleased with how well it was handling", said Justin. "On our first qualifying run we did a quick time on the Bridgestone (standard) black tyres that still would have been good enough for pole, but we weren't sure what everyone else was doing down the pit lane. So we decided to see what the (softer) red tyres were like for the second run and they were great."

"It's fun to do one last race here in the Champ Car", added Justin. "And I'm also very pleased to keep up the tradition of the McDonald's car being quickest here! Before qualifying I thought it's a bit of pressure taking over this seat at a track where Sebastien (Bourdais) has always gone so well. So I'm pleased to have done as well as we have today and I think we can relax a bit tomorrow and focus on making the car even quicker."
