Junqueira & Moraes Give Convincing Performance's Saturday
Long Beach, California (April 19, 2008) - Dale Coyne Racing drivers Bruno Junqueira and Mario Moraes both showed they had fast cars in second round qualifying Saturday afternoon.
Junqueira saved his best for last as he navigated the 1.968-mile street course in 1:07.786 seconds (104.517 mph), which earned him an 11th place starting position in Sunday's 34th Annual Grand Prix of Long Beach.
His #18 Z-Line Designs car could have cracked the top five if not for a car that spun in front of him, which happened on his fastest lap of the day.
"I don't know which Forsythe car it was, but it spun out in front of me on my fastest lap and that cost me a couple tenths," said Bruno Junqueira. "If it wasn't for that, I think I would have had a serious shot at qualifying even higher."
Mario Moraes's Sonny's Bar-B-Q car had a near flawless performance during second round qualifying until he locked his breaks coming into turn 10 and broke the front wing off when he hit the tire barriers. The incident brought out the red flag and cost the 19-year old rookie his fastest time, which at the time was in the top 10. Under Champ Car World Series rules, when a driver brings out a red flag, they lose their fastest lap.
"The Sonny's Car has been great all weekend," said Mario Moraes. "I'm disappointed because my fastest time would have given me a top 10 qualifying spot. I have to start 19th, but I know I have a car that can get me to the front quickly."
