Tagliani Has the Confidence, the Race Car, and is Ready for the Inaugural Belgium Champ Car Grand Prix
ZOLDER, Belgium (August 25, 2007) - Rocketsports Racing's driver Alex Tagliani is happy with his results today, even though he is starting sixth on the grid, he has the confidence he needs in his #8 Rocketsports Champ Car and is ready to take the green flag for the inaugural Belgian Champ Car Grand Prix.
This morning consisted of logging several more laps in hopes of finding the car Tagliani was looking for to run this afternoon in the final round of qualifying. The session went well for the team, as they were able to find the answers they needed to come close to a good race car for Tagliani this afternoon.
Tagliani opted to save both sets of the softer Bridgestone Potenza Red tires for the final round of qualifying, when he and the team knew the track would be faster and have more grip. Tagliani's car adapted better to the Red Bridgestone tires this weekend. The balance stayed very similar and the tires provided increased overall grip. He headed out for his first stint and on his fifth orbit around the 2.492-mile, he recorded a time of 1:13.384 (122.250 mph/196.742 km/h) and topped the charts. His first run ended after five laps, and he came for new tires to prepare for his last run. The French-Canadian then headed out for his final six laps of the day, but was unable to better his time. His previously posted time would be good enough to grab a sixth spot on the grid, and was only one-tenth away from a fourth-place qualifying finish.
Tagliani will attempt to make his 128th start when he takes the green flag in Belgium. This will be his tenth top-ten start this season, as there has only been one race in 2007 that has not seen him start tenth or better.
After a morning warm-up session on Sunday, the Champ Cars will grid at 1:15 p.m. CET and Round 11 of the 2007 Champ Car World Series will be underway at 2:00 p.m. local time. The Belgium race can be seen live on Sunday, August 26, in the States on ESPN Classic with coverage beginning at 8:00 a.m. ET. There will be a replay of the race on Monday, August 27 at 2:00 a.m. ET on ESPN2. Fans can also follow the Rocketsports team on the internet by logging onto www.champcar.ws and signing up for Race Director.
Alex Tagliani #8 Rocketsports Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone: "I am happy; it was a good team effort today. The #8 Rocketsports crew did a very good job. We had a really good car today. On the first set of tires, we were second, and I am very happy about that. Then on the second set, the car continued to be good, but we might have overshot on the tire pressures. The temperature rose, and the sun came out, and I do not think that we compensated enough for those conditions towards the end of the session. Overall, I think the #8 Rocketsports car is good for the race. The top six cars are really close to each other, so I think that we are going to have an amazing race with the car that we have. We just have to get a good strategy and we should be alright."
